English Language Developoment (ELD)
M. Lynn Bennion Elementary is committed to providing English Language Learners with the opportunity to become literate in the English language. Students for whom English is not his/her native language are required to spend 45 minutes every day in an English Language Development (ELD) class. In ELD class we use Rigby, On Our Way to English, a program designed especially for English Language Learners. Daily classes are focused on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students are tested once every year using the Utah Academic Language Proficiency Assessment (UALPA). The UALPA test is mandated by the No Child Left Behind act of 2001 and is used to determine a student’s individual academic language proficiency level. Additional assessments include Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), and progress monitoring which is used several times throughout the school year also guide each student’s academic goal.
