About Our School

August 26, 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:  DAHLIA CORDOVA

Hello Everyone,

I hope this letter finds you all healthy, well rested and ready for an exciting year of learning at M. Lynn Bennion Elementary School.  Although we will be starting the year in a distance learning environment, I anticipate that with all of us working together this will be a successful year for everyone.

Remote (online classes will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  The regular school schedule will be as follows:

Start Time:  8:15 a.m.

End Time:    1:45 p.m.

Teachers have been reaching out to our families to schedule a time for students to come to school to meet them, get materials, pick up a device or hotspot if needed and to do some initial testing with students.  Keep in mind that if you haven’t registered yet, you need to indicate if you will need a device for at home instruction. Hot spots are limited therefore they will be distributed to those in most need.

Our school partners, Capital Church have made it possible for every student attending M. Lynn Bennion this year to receive a backpack full of school supplies to use at home while we are in this distance learning environment.

We appreciate the patrons of Capital Church for their on-going support.  Even when we went to a soft closure in the spring, they were there as volunteers to distribute food to families.  They also provided funds to purchase school supplies to fill the goody bags we distributed to every student.  The patrons of Capital Church have always been there to support our school and families in ways that make our school a great place for learning.

Students will be able to get the backpacks donated by Capital Church beginning on August 31st.  Teachers will be distributing them during their individual meeting with students or at a time that is most convenient for parents to pick them up if individual meetings have already taken place.

Back to School Night is scheduled for September 10, starting at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom.  Teachers will post the link on their schedules and on Class DOJO. I will be posting a Back to School Night message from the principal on the school website that evening before individual class meetings begin.  We look forward to you tuning in to get important information from your child’s teacher and what you can expect from our school start in a distance learning environment.

We will continue to provide school information on a weekly basis from our teachers and on our website.  Teachers will post information regarding schedules on the Canvas platform.  Communication from individual teachers will also come from Class DOJO.  It is important that you sign up on Class DOJO with your child’s teacher so you have direct and consistent communication as it pertains to important events coming up in the school or classroom.   Lastly, information will be posted on the school website at https://bennion.slcschools.org or the district website at https://slcschools.org.

In closing, I want you to know that even though school is starting out in a distance learning environment, we are only a phone call or click away.  Please reach out to me or any of my staff if you have a question, concern or need support of any kind.  Remember we are all in this together and this is going to be an amazing year of growth and learning for all of us.

With much gratitude and appreciation;

Dahlia Cordova, Principal

Our teachers are truly dedicated to educating all children. Over the past three years, Bennion has increased the learning of all students and has become a Top Performing Title I school. The greatness of Bennion Elementary lies in the people who fill its halls everyday: the students, the teachers, and the support staff. Bennion is a student-centered school with a strong academic focus. There is a joy in learning together and a commitment to learn more about how we can better serve our students. The people of Bennion Elementary are an effective team and work collaboratively to create an outstanding academic institution for all students.

  • We are a community of students, teachers, parents, volunteers, and coordinators who believe the future of our society lies in the success of our children’s education. All children can learn, and we believe each child must be treated with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.
  • We are dedicated to providing the most relevant and effective learning experiences possible. We empower students to take responsibility for their learning, personal growth, and actions.
  • We meet the needs of all students, recognize and celebrate our diversity, and enable all children to meet the challenges of tomorrow with confidence.
  • We implement comprehensive educational programs that are data driven and ensure that every student demonstrates growth.
  • We offer Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) programs. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
  • We are committed to providing quality academic intervention programs that equitably address an individual student’s educational needs.
  • We believe exposure to the arts, in all forms, enhances a child's understanding of the world around them and provides a platform in learning and self-expression. It is also an effective tool to enhance learning in core subjects and plays a significant role in our strategy of differentiated learning.
  • Bennion has developed longstanding community involvement to create an extensive visual arts program. All students attend art class once a week for 45 minutes. The art curriculum builds upon topics learned at each grade.
